Organophosphate Poisoning A Long-term And Epigenetic Affair

Debates exist over chemicals because we have become too used to their presence in society.  We build with them, grow crops and kill weeds with them, and fashion ever more amazing products with them, and then wonder why we are being swamped by a sea of neurological disorders, including ADHD in children, aggressive behavior, depression and suicidal ideation.  Chemical engineering seems too profitable and too much of an attractant in terms of an imagined "Brave New World".  We feel we are evolving into a better type of human, and this evolutionary figment of our crippled imaginations is precisely the grease being unconsciously used by our romantic flight upward to help us slip and slide into greater and greater error.  And, as we err, the chemical nightmares reveal themselves...

"Many organophosphates are also associated with irritation of the skin and upper respiratory tract...  The controversy over whether neurobehavioural effects persist after recovery from organophosphate poisoning has continued for 30 years.  There have been reports of deficits in memory and abstraction on test batteries and subclinical decreases in vibrotactile sensitivity in workers recovering from organophosphate poisoning, but results of clinical and neurological examinations were normal.  Among workers who apply organophosphates but have not suffered poisoning episodes, some studies have shown similar types of subclinical neurobehavioural deficits and subclinical electroencephalographic abnormalities, whereas others had largely negative results" (O'Malley 1997; my emphasis).

Recovery from organophosphate poisoning?  This is not, apparently, essentially possible, for epigenetic discoveries now reveal a hidden swath of future-programmed health impacts that can span generations.  We thought that one could recover from this type of poisoning, and then we discovered that effects were also often long-term and even profound...

Note:  "Various epidemiological studies have demonstrated that individuals exposed to a single large toxic dose, or to small subclinical doses, of organophosphorus compounds have developed a chronic neurotoxicity that persists for years after exposure and is distinct from both cholinergic and OPIDN effects...   Our review of the literature indicated that these studies describe a nervous system disorder induced by organophosphorous compounds which involves neuronal degeneration and subsequent neurological, neuroal, and neuropsychological consequences" (Abou-Donia, 2003).

The neurobehavioural controversy exists precisely because, as this information clearly shows, most difficult-to-define poisoning impacts are sub-clinical, or presenting as a condition or illness that is not readily identified by the usual orthodox medical investigations (which are generally fairly obtuse).  This is why sensitive neuro-psychological tests and behavioural assessment are necessary for those more 'gently' touched by pesticides.

Neighbour's Pesticide = Your Kids' Sick (Developmental Neurotoxicity)

In this insane, chemically-addicted world it is not against the law to chemically assault a person: to spray poison over an individual via the sheer stupidity & negligence of spray drift, or splatter toxic pesticide into a family's back yard from an adjoining property.  Even if that toxic agent amplifies behavioural problems, generates learning difficulties, promotes joint pains, fatigue, leg cramps or restless leg syndrome (ruining sleep for hundreds of thousands worldwide), or spurs on the cancer pandemic, or aborts foetuses in humans, or is a potential slate-wiper in the wider environment!  Even if the use of these chemicals stands as a statement of profound character destruction on all levels.

This is the signature of a technologized & brutalized society infatuated with monstrously toxic poisons.  A dumb society out of touch with the true reality of a planet demanding respect & cooperation simply by virtue of its inherent makeup & design (A "continuum of expectations" (Liedloff 1986))!  What we are doing with chemicals now has no precedent in history!  Note:  "The combined evidence suggests that neuro developmental disorders caused by industrial chemicals has created a silent pandemic in modern society.  Although these chemicals might have caused impaired brain development in millions of children worldwide, the profound effects of such a pandemic are not apparent from available health statistics.  Additionally, as shown by this Review, only a few chemical causes have been recognized so the full effects of our industrial activities could be substantially greater than recognized at present."

Continuing:  "The consequences of a pandemic of developmental neurotoxicity extend beyond descriptive data for incidence and prevalence of clinically diagnosed disorders.  Increased risk of Parkinson's disease or other neurodegenerative diseases is a further potential consequence of the pandemic."  [p.2174]  Source: P Grandjean, PJ Landrigan 2006.  Developmental neurotoxicity of industrial chemicals.  Lancet 2006; 368: 2167-78.  Published Online November 8, 2006.  http://www.sciencedirect.com.  DOI:10.1016/S0140-6736(06)69665-7.  Institute of Public Health, University of Southern Denmark, Odense, Denmark.  (Prof P Grandjean MD); Department of Environmental Health, Harvard School of Public Health, Boston, MA, USA (P Grandjean); Department of Community Medicine (Prof PJ Landrigan MD); and Department of Pediatrics, Mount Sinai School of Medicine, New York, NY, USA (PJ Landrigan).  http://sciencedirect.com.

Suicide Deaths From Pesticide Poisoning

In the wake of suicidal behavior, self poisoning from pesticide ingestion registers as a massive problem, particularly in developing countries.  It accounts for hundreds of thousands of deaths annually (Bertolote & Fleischmann 2006).  Interestingly, the World Health Organisation has suggested that "restricting access to commonly used methods of suicide" means "restricting pesticide use to those compounds least harmful to humans" (ibid.).

This thinking and strategy simply reinforces the globally developing notion that we are overusing pesticides that are far too toxic.

The solvents in pesticides may also contribute to neurological disorders such as memory problems and chronic depression, so it is not just a matter of middle to low income farming communities generating individuals who are depressed because of issues with government or income.  This is an  issue with deep toxicological ramifications.

Exposure to herbicides = Asthma

Note:  "Exposure to herbicides (weed killers) before the age of one is linked to a more than four-fold increase in childhood asthma" (BeyondPesticides.org 2008, citing Boise, et al. 2004).  This should not be surprising when it is understood that simply being close to an agricultural area can predispose women to miscarriages.  If the chemical contaminants flooding our planet can't abort you, then they'll attack you with clinging, morbid symptoms once you have made your grand appearance!

Older diseases once reserved for the elderly are now attacking our young, along with the appearance of brand new disease states.  It is our apathetic and lazy appeal to chemicalized products and millions of pounds of pesticides dispersed annually that are bringing about this human health pandemic on a global scale.

THE BENEFITS OF NATURAL ORGANIC HERBAL PRODUCTS

Herbs provide a natural appeal to nature for our health.  Prepared correctly, herbal medicines can treat a range of human and animal health issues (in animals, behavioural problems can be treated with herbal preparations).

Natural Organic Herbs and Organic Herbal Products often have soothing effects, and can typically effectively treat a range of health issues without the damaging and irritating side effects often associated with drug therapies.  However, herbs can also be very strong in their impact and, as such, need to be prescribed after consultation with a qualified Herbalist or Naturopath.  This is especially so when herbal preparations are taken together with other medications (such as nutritional supplements or orthodox drugs).  Note the web page "Research of Herbal Medicines and Natural Remedies" (http://floraleads.com/herbs4health.htm) in terms of this precaution.

Natural Organic Herbal medicines need to be individually fitted to each person and the context of their life.  Prior injuries, genetic disorders, other medications used, and overall current health status all need to be factored into the selection of appropriate herbal medicines.

Essentially, a detailed case study is required.  Each individual is an individual, and their health and toxicological story will be distinctive (the path to health often has many toxic episodes inserted in it).  And while modern science (which does not necessarily have all the answers) informs medicine on human health and disease states, science and other beneficial philosophical approaches inform the evaluation of the person seeking out more natural ways of advancing their health.  Instead of (often) toxic medications being prescribed, the Naturopath may prescribe Natural Organic Herbal Products, homoeopath remedies, various types of massage, and nutritional remedies or supplements.

See: http://poisonedpeople.com & http://poisoningandlegalaction.com.au for further information on chemical poisoning.

The web site "Natural Organic & Herbal" (http://organic.shoestringmall.com) provides a wide range of Organic Herbal Products to help you burn fat, lose weight, and increase energy and stamina. Don't put off trying these products.  Right nutrition can transform lives!

Brain Cancer, Breast Cancer And Uterine Cancer Linked To Toxic Waste

Human Health Studies can reveal a lot about the ultimate results of placing waste depots near people and properties.  For example, the Castlereagh Human Health Study (Williams & Jalaludin, 1993) investigated the increased disease incidence arising through toxic waste leakage from the Castlereagh Waste Management Centre in Londonderry, Sydney.  This is a waste deposit area that took in over 2 million tonnes of liquid waste over a period of decades.

Note in this regard in the areas affected by depot leachate (leaking toxic waste residues): "the Human Health Study found that the "rate of brain cancer in males [is] more than three times the NSW average", with "the breast cancer rate between 1979 and 1983... two-and-a-half times the State average, with eight cases identified, while three cases of uterine cancer between 1984 and 1988... [were] more than five times the average" (Kerr, 1995:1-3)" (Thompson, 1998:9).

Strangely, the study's politically comfortable 'inconclusive' outcome was followed by an "alert status [that was] adopted in relation to [the] health outcomes..." (Williams & Jalaludin, 1993:v).
